Movement in Stillness: Why Doing Nothing is the Best "Exercise" for Menopause Fatigue

As women navigating perimenopause and menopause, we are constantly bombarded with advice on how to stay active. We are told to lift heavier, run further, and sweat out our symptoms to fight midlife weight gain and bone loss.

But what happens when you wake up with a body that feels completely, utterly drained?

What do you do when menopause fatigue hits so hard that even the thought of putting on your sneakers makes you want to cry?

As a menopause movement coach, my clients often confess that they force themselves through workouts on pure adrenaline and guilt. They believe that if they aren’t actively sweating, they are failing.

Today, I want to give you a radical piece of advice: Sometimes, the most powerful movement you can do for your body is to stay completely still.

The Dangerous Trap of "Pushing Through" Midlife Exhaustion

When we are in perimenopause or menopause, our body is undergoing a massive hormonal renovation. Our estrogen levels are fluctuating, our sleep is disrupted, and our nervous system is already under immense internal stress.

When we force an already exhausted body through a high-intensity workout, a dangerous physiological shift occurs:

  1. Cortisol Spikes: Our body views the forced exercise as an emergency, releasing the stress hormone cortisol.

  2. Symptoms Worsen: Chronic high cortisol triggers more severe hot flashes, mood swings, and deep menopause anxiety.

  3. Weight Retention: High cortisol levels instruct your body to hold onto fat—especially around our midsection—to protect itself from the perceived stress.

If you are suffering from joint stiffness in perimenopause, pushing through pain changes your biomechanics, often leading to injuries rather than relief.

What is "Movement in Stillness"?

Movement in stillness doesn't mean giving up on your physical health. It means shifting from fitness as a punishment to movement as medicine.

Even when our body is completely still on the outside, incredible, healing movement is happening on the inside. Our blood is circulating, our lymphatic system is clearing out toxins, our tight muscles are unwinding, and our nervous system is shifting from "fight or flight" into "rest and digest."

By practicing purposeful stillness, we create the physiological space required to ease menopause anxiety.

Try This Today: The Reclined Butterfly Pose (Supta Badha Koonasana)

The next time your body feels completely drained, I want you to skip the gym and head to your bed or a comfortable mat.

  1. The Setup: Lie flat on your back. If your lower back feels tight, place a pillow under your head or a rolled-up blanket under your spine

    .

  2. The Stature: Bring the soles of your feet together and let your knees gently fall open to the sides, forming a diamond shape with your legs. (If this strains your inner thighs, place pillows under your knees for support).

  3. The Rest: Place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly. Close your eyes.

  4. The Breath: Breathe deeply into your belly for 5 to 10 minutes. Feel the internal movement of your breath expanding your ribs.

The Benefits of Reclined Butterfly for Menopause:

  • Relieves Pelvic Stiffness: Midlife hormonal drops can cause a tight, aching pelvis. This pose gently opens the hips and groin, easing joint stiffness.

  • Calms the Mind: By focusing on your breath, you actively down-regulate your nervous system, providing immediate relief from overwhelming anxiety.

  • Lowers Cortisol: It signals to your brain that you are safe, allowing your stress hormones to plummet and your body to enter a state of active recovery.

Rediscovering a Joyful, Active Life—Through Rest

You deserve to live a midlife that feels active, joyful and free from chronic pain. And sometimes, the roadmap to getting there starts by simply lying down.
